REDYSIGN was represented at the 13th Iberoamerican Congress of Pulp and Paper Research (CIADICYP), held in Concepción, Chile, from November 4 to 7. The event featured the participation of REDYSIGN partners RISE PFI and TECNALIA and offered a unique opportunity to present some of the project’s research and expand its influence within the scientific community.
This congress, which has been one of the most prominent events in the pulp and paper industry, as well as in lignocellulosic materials and biorefineries over the last two decades, returned to the historic academic city of Concepción. The University of Concepción became a vibrant hub for scientific and technological innovation, hosting leading experts and fostering discussions on the latest developments in the field.
CIADICYP 2024: Theme and objectives
The 13th edition of CIADICYP, under the theme “Building Bridges Between Technology and Sustainability”, brought together renowned researchers to present the latest scientific and technological advancements, setting the stage for future strategic directions in lignocellulosic materials and biorefineries. Among the distinguished participants were our colleagues Gary Chinga Carrasco (RISE PFI), Daniel Martínez Filgueira (TECNALIA) and Álvaro Tejado (TECNALIA), who made valuable contributions and showcased the REDYSIGN project.
This year’s event featured four days of keynote presentations, eight sessions with oral presentations, and two poster sessions with over 53 posters on display. Topics covered included:
- Cellulose and Nanocellulose: Production, characterization, modification, new processes, and innovative materials.
- Lignocellulosic Biomass Valorization: Waste utilization, biofuels, value-added chemicals, and side-stream valorization.
- Technologies and Processes: Breakthrough technologies for fibers and materials, enzyme-assisted biotechnology, and chemical/thermochemical conversions.
- Paper and Biobased Products: Paper production, packaging, coatings, composites, and biobased products from wood and non-woody resources.
- Sustainability and Environmental Impact: Energy, environment, and sustainability in pulp and biorefineries, along with advanced analytical techniques for lignocellulose characterization.
REDYSIGN at CIADICYP 2024
REDYSIGN played an active role in presenting several of these key topics, with the following contributions:
- Gary Chinga Carrasco (RISE PFI) presented on “Innovative Products from Wood and Pulp Fibers” during Session 1: Pulp, Paper, and Fiber-Based Materials on November 5.
- Daniel Martínez (TECNALIA) delivered a presentation on “Thermoforming of High-Yield Pulp: Effect of Fibre Enzymatic Hydrophobization” during Session 7: Breakthrough Technologies for Wood and Non-Woody Resources on November 7.
The presentations were of great interest to the audience, sparking valuable discussions and contributing to a deeper understanding of the latest advancements in the field.
A platform for innovation and collaboration
The event not only provided an opportunity to deepen discussions around REDYSIGN’s goals but also served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange with leading experts, exploring the latest innovations, and expanding scientific networks beyond Europe. The conference also facilitated connections with young researchers and students, fostering new collaborations within the scientific community. This was an excellent opportunity to amplify the project’s impact in the development of sustainable technologies.

We continue to push forward with sustainable technologies and strengthen our presence within the global scientific community. The next edition of the congress will take place in 2026 and will be held in the Austrian city of Graz. By then, REDYSIGN will be at a more advanced stage and ready to present new, exciting results.
