Towards a recyclable, biobased alternative for fresh meat packaging.

REDYSIGN is a major European Research and Innovation action which focuses on the development of several resource-efficient processes dedicated to the production and circularization of a biobased, recyclable, and smart fibre-based packaging (FBP) alternative for fresh meat distribution as a substitute for current non-circular multi-plastic solutions.

Redysign concept

Every intermediate in the multicomponent packaging (the tray, the barrier coating, the absorbent pad, and the film) will be made almost exclusively of wood constituents (macro-micro-nanofibres, lignin and sugars). The new packaging will also integrate two sensors to prevent food spoilage (one to detect early rotting, one to detect breaks in the cold chain) and an identification marker to improve sorting and thereby increase recycling efficiency.

The REDYSIGN multidisciplinary consortium brings together 13 partners from 7 European countries, including some of the leading companies and research institutes in the European bio-based sector. The project is coordinated by Tecnalia Research & Innovation in Spain.
