The participation of HOLOSS in the conference provided an opportunity for the project to consolidate knowledge on the application of the SSbD framework in case studies and network with key industry actors in the value chain.
The city of Monte Verità (Switzerland) became the epicenter for innovation and collaboration for one full week (November 10-15), during the Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design Conference (SSbD24), organised by Empa. The 2024 edition served as a platform for discussing advancements in sustainable design and materials aligned with the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability.
REDYSIGN, represented by HOLOSS, took center stage during the poster presentations, showcasing significant progress in eco-design strategies for fresh meat packaging solutions. The project team, led by Ana Elisa and António Nogueira, had the opportunity to present a poster titled: Integrating SSbD and Eco-Design Principles into Fresh Meat Packaging Solutions. Their contribution provided key insights into applying Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) methodologies to develop innovative and sustainable packaging options.
SSbD24 Conference: Advancing the SSbD Framework
The SSbD24 Conference attracted a diverse group of experts, industry professionals, and policymakers, offering a robust platform for discussions on the implementation of SSbD. The week-long program featured keynote presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, with highlights including:
- Safety and sustainability assessments in the early innovation phase
- Development of toolboxes and emerging concepts for SSbD
- Case studies illustrating real-world applications
- A dedicated session for Early-Stage Researchers, fostering collaboration within and beyond academia

HOLOSS’ participation at the conference reinforced REDYSIGN’s commitment to advancing safe and sustainable solutions that address complex industry challenges. According to the team, the project is poised to integrate the valuable insights from SSbD24 into its ongoing research, further enhancing its impact on the development of safe, eco-friendly packaging solutions for fresh meat.
The work we presented illustrates the connection between the SSbD structure and Eco-Design principles, detailing the steps we took to apply the Eco-Design methodology to the REDYSIGN solutions. Its application to the innovations of the project will contribute to enhancing the overall sustainability of our solutions, minimising negative effects on the environment, and promoting circular economy. Attending the event not only raised awareness of the project and the challenges we face but also provided a valuable opportunity for conversation and problem-solving”, explained Ana Elisa.
