To start with, why is the REDYSIGN project important for Fibenol? It is a unique project where all Fibenol biomaterials —lignin, wood sugars, and specialty cellulose— are used for different purposes.
- Lignin LIGNOVA. Lignin is processed using MetGen technology and used in water-barrier formulations.
- Wood Sugars. Sugars are used to produce adhesives between trays and films.
- Specialty Cellulose. Specialty cellulose is used to make oxygen and grease barriers.
Now, let’s explore how Fibenol produces its biomaterials, the unique processes involved, and how these fit into the concept of sustainable production.
From wood waste to valuable resources: The Sunburst Technology
Fibenol uses certified lower-quality hardwood and plywood industry residues originating from Estonia as fully biobased input materials. With a state-of-the-art fractionation process powered by Sunburst technology, the company converts over 90% of the input material into end products: lignin, wood sugars, and specialty cellulose. What makes the pre-treatment special is the combination of temperature, pressure, grinding, dilute acid, and steam explosion, resulting in chemically unmodified, high-purity biomaterials.
But, what makes the Fibenol wood valorization process sustainable?
- Renewable Energy. They use 100% renewable energy sourced from a Graanul Invest-operated power plant 100 meters away, running exclusively on tree bark.
- High-Efficiency Water Treatment. Their water treatment plant, built as part of the Sweetwoods project, has a 95% process water reuse rate, providing high-quality water for reuse.
- High-Yield Production with Sunburst Technology. Moreover, Sunburst technology maximizes yields, particularly in specialty cellulose production, with yields exceeding 95% compared to the industry average of 60-70%.

Here are some special qualities of the biomaterials Fibenol produces that drive the REDYSIGN project:
- Specialty Cellulose. Acts as a strength additive in paper and thermoformed products without affecting pulp drainage.
- Specialty Cellulose. Improves resistance to oxygen, grease, and oil permeability in barrier coatings.
- Lignin LIGNOVA. Naturally lipophilic, lignin LIGNOVA provides an excellent water barrier when properly utilized.
- Monomeric Wood Sugars. These sugars can be easily functionalized into various sugar derivatives.
