The solutions will be presented on 24 March in Brussels, reflecting the project’s progress towards fibre-based and smart packaging systems designed for circularity.
REDYSIGN will take part in the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) Stakeholder Forum 2026, which will be held on 24 March at The Square in Brussels. The event will bring together key actors from across Europe’s bio-based ecosystem for a full day of exchanges, showcasing projects, technologies and industrial solutions aimed at accelerating the transition towards a competitive and circular bioeconomy.
As one of the projects funded under the CBE JU programme, REDYSIGN will contribute to the exhibition space presenting a set of prototypes that reflect the current stage of development of its smart, fibre-based, recyclable-by-design packaging solutions for fresh meat applications.

Advancing recyclable-by-design packaging for fresh meat
As the transition towards circular and bio-based packaging accelerates, REDYSIGN focuses on one of the most demanding applications in the food sector: fresh meat packaging. Building on lignocellulosic materials, the project addresses the challenge of replacing complex, fossil-based structures with fibre-based solutions that remain functional, smart and recyclable. By integrating wood fibres, micro- and nanofibres, lignin and bio-based additives, REDYSIGN demonstrates how recyclable-by-design packaging can meet both performance requirements and circular economy principles.
At the CBE JU Stakeholder Forum 2026, REDYSIGN will showcase an integrated portfolio of tray, pad, lidding film and adhesive prototypes, demonstrating how circularity, performance and smart functionalities can be combined within a single packaging system.
PREDYSIGN prototypes on display
The exhibition will feature several prototypes developed within the project:
Fibre-based trays
Two tray concepts produced using dry- and wet-thermoforming technologies will be presented. Made from TMP and CTMP fibres, these trays are plastic-free, recyclable and wood-based, with advanced surface treatments using fully bio-based coatings. One of the tray concepts also integrates an identification marker, supporting improved sorting and thus recyclability at end-of-life.


All-wood absorbent pads
REDYSIGN has developed two types of absorbent pads based entirely on wood-derived components: the first, incorporates a new all-cellulose highly absorbing core, while the second shows that the substitution of the external plastic film with a fully wood-pulp-based solution is possible. These solutions deliver enhanced performance while remaining fully recyclable-by-design, eliminating the need for conventional plastic-based components.


Sensor-enabled (Smart) lidding films
Two types of transparent, wood-based lidding films will be showcased together with a printed sensor designed to provide information on food spoilage, contributing to improved food safety and reduced food waste.


Bio-based adhesive
The exhibition will also include a 100% bio-based adhesive derived from wood sugars, developed to thermoseal the lidding film to the tray while maintaining recyclability within standard paper recycling streams.
From innovation to industrial relevance
By presenting these prototypes at the CBE JU Stakeholder Forum, REDYSIGN aims to demonstrate how innovative resource-efficient technologies are being scaled towards industrial relevance, while supporting European policy objectives on circular economy, climate neutrality and sustainable packaging.
