Representatives from TECNALIA, RISE-PFI, PACKBENEFIT, and FNMT gathered in Spain to discuss and establish the next steps of the REDYSIGN project
REDYSIGN partners have joined efforts, collaborating intensively in Spain to achieve the ambitious goals of the project. Members from TECNALIA and RISE-PFI gathered to visit the facilities of PACKBENEFIT and the Royal Mint of Spain (Fábrica Nacional de la Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda-FNMT). Additionally, RISE-PFI conducted a crucial stay at TECNALIA, advancing the project significantly in its 9th month of development.
JOINING EFFORTS: TECHNICAL VISITS AND COLLABORATIVE MEETINGS IN SPAIN
During an intensive week of work and productive discussions, from June 10th, TECNALIA’s REDYSIGN team—Daniel Martínez, Jaime García, and Álvaro Tejado—along with Gary Chinga-Carrasco and Eva Pasquier from RISE-PFI, visited the production plant of PACKBENEFIT in Valladolid (Spain), a leading innovative company in sustainable packaging for the food industry. They were guided and briefed by Nuria Escudero and Rebeca Valladares, who showcased their company and detailed the specific processes being designed under the project.
On June 11th, the group visited FNMT in Burgos (Spain), where they were welcomed by project members Vicente García-Juez and Esther Gómez. FNMT plays a pivotal role on the project utilizing patented identification markers based on the RAMAN effect to identify and facilitate the recycling of each packaging component.
The visits to both production plants were highly productive, providing insights into the specific processes directly related to REDYSIGN activities and the pilot equipment used in the project. Following these visits and extensive explanations, specific meetings were organized to discuss approaches necessary for success in the more technical work packages. These include the production of plastic-free trays and the incorporation of identification markers which do not compromise the recycling efficiency, always under the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) strategy already designed.
Continuing the gathering in Spain, from June 12th to 14th, TECNALIA hosted Chinga-Carrasco and Pasquier (RISE-PFI) to further progress from the laboratory work conducted by RISE-PFI and METGEN on low energy production of TMP fibres, towards the pilot phase.
The collective effort to develop a sustainable alternative to replace fossil-based packaging with wood-derived materials is advancing and evolving. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of all partners involved, increasingly significant results are being achieved that will contribute significantly to the EU’s objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
