The event will bring together key actors from across the value chain to address sustainability, functionality and traceability challenges in meat packaging.
REDYSIGN, together with Packaging Cluster and INNOVACC, has been working on the co-organisation of a workshop on innovation in sustainable packaging for the meat sector, which will take place on 3 March in Caldes de Montbui, Catalonia. The event will bring together key stakeholders from across the value chain to explore current challenges and foster collaborative opportunities in the field of smart fibre-based packaging. The session will be conducted in Spanish.
The workshop is designed to identify and accelerate innovative solutions addressing pressing challenges related to sustainability, functionality and traceability in meat packaging. By combining project presentations with a participatory working session, the event will create a space for open dialogue between companies, research centres and sectoral organisations.
A collaborative agenda to drive circular innovation
The programme will begin at 10:00 with registration and a welcome session featuring representatives from IRTA, Packaging Cluster, Zabala Innovation and INNOVACC. This will be followed by the presentation of three innovation initiatives contributing to a more circular and resource-efficient packaging ecosystem:
- REDYSIGN (11:00 – 11:30) develops smart fibre-based packaging that is recyclable-by-design for fresh meat applications. Based on lignocellulose and innovative resource-efficient technologies, the project integrates components such as fibre-based trays, barrier coatings, absorbent pads and films, as well as digital tools and sensors to enhance circularity and reduce environmental impact.
Presented by Álvaro Tejado (project coordinator at TECNALIA), Nuria Escudero (PackBenefit), Vicente García (FNMT) and Ainara Llona (Eroski).
- OXICOOK (11:30 – 11:45) explores new strategies to improve the preservation of cooked and sliced meat products, contributing to reducing food waste throughout the value chain.
Presented by Elsa Lloret (IRTA) and Jordi Solís (Grupo Carinsa).
- Traceability Platform for Reusable Packaging Management (11:45 – 12:00) promotes more efficient and transparent management of packaging, facilitating its reuse and correct recovery at the end of its useful life.
Presented by Arantxa Albarsanz (Jané Morraja Holding).
Following a networking coffee break, participants will engage in an interactive workshop session entitled “From concrete challenges to shared opportunities”, scheduled to begin at 12:30. Through a collaborative dynamic, attendees will identify real sectoral challenges and explore potential pathways for joint future initiatives and actions.
The day will conclude with a networking lunch and closing remarks.
Strengthening the value chain
The workshop will gather companies and entities involved in projects such as OXICOOK, REDYSIGN and the Traceability Platform, representing actors from across the meat and packaging ecosystem. This joint initiative reflects REDYSIGN’s commitment not only to developing smart fibre-based packaging that is recyclable-by-design, but also to fostering collaboration across the meat and packaging ecosystem in order to accelerate the transition towards more circular solutions.
A limited number of places remain available until maximum capacity is reached.
